The King of Fighters 2003

The King of Fighters 2003 marks a serious shake-up for the series, swapping the classic round-robin team format for a tag-based system where you can hot-swap fighters mid-match. Released in arcades on Neo-Geo MVS hardware in 2003, it's the tenth mainline entry, the final MVS King of Fighters, and the first one developed under the SNK Playmore banner after the company's restructuring.

It also kicks off the Tales of Ash story arc with the debut of Ash Crimson, Duo Lon, and Shen Woo as the new lead trio. Leader Specials, Super Cancels, and the team-tag mechanic give combo hunters fresh routes to chase, and the roster spans 32 fighters across PlayStation 2, Xbox, and PC ports. KOF 2003 is divisive but historically pivotal, the bridge between the old NESTS saga and everything XI and XIII would build.
