The King of Fighters '96
The King of Fighters '96 is SNK's third entry in the team-based fighting game series, dropping into arcades and Neo Geo in 1996 with sharper sprites, redrawn animations, and a fully rebuilt soundtrack. The Orochi Saga moves into its middle act here, and the cast feels heavier for it, with story beats threading through every team's ending.
Twenty-seven fighters fill the regular lineup, joined by hidden bosses Geese Howard and Wolfgang Krauser pulled straight from Fatal Fury, plus newcomers Leona, Mature, Vice, and Mr. Big from Art of Fighting. The system gets Rush combos for easy chains, an emergency evasion roll, and a redesigned super meter that charges through aggressive play. Single, Team, Versus, and Survival modes round out the package, and KOF '96 still gets ranked among the cleanest pre-2001 entries in the series.
