The Last Blade

The Last Blade 2 is SNK's 1998 weapons-based fighting game for the Neo Geo MVS, a moody sequel set in late-Edo-era Japan where samurai, monks, and even fishing-pole-wielding eccentrics clash with steel. Quarter-circle and double-half-circle motions drive special moves in a way that will feel instantly familiar to anyone raised on Street Fighter, but the deflect system and Power versus Speed mode select give it a flavor entirely its own.

The roster of 16 fighters pulls in returning faces like Kaede, Moriya, and Yuki alongside new challengers including Setsuna and Kojiroh. Dreamcast, Neo Geo CD, PS4, Vita, and Wii Virtual Console releases kept the arcade fighter circulating through the years. The Last Blade 2 still gets cited as one of the prettiest 2D fighters ever made, and its combo system rewards players willing to learn the deflect timings cold.
