1994 — now
The King of Fighters '95
The King of Fighters '95 is the 1995 Neo Geo sequel that turned a one-off crossover into an actual series. SNK kept the 3-on-3 team battles from '94 and added the team edit feature, letting you ignore the prebuilt squads and assemble any trio you want from the full roster. That single change is why every KOF since runs the same way.
The roster brings in Iori Yagami as Kyo Kusanagi's fated rival and the seed of the Orochi storyline that carries the next three games. Returning teams from Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, and Ikari Warriors round out the cast, with Saisyu Kusanagi waiting as a hidden boss. Ports landed on Neo Geo CD, PlayStation, Sega Saturn with a RAM cart, and Game Boy, and later collections kept it playable on PSP and Wii. A foundational arcade fighter for anyone tracing the roots of modern team-based combos.
